Club History

The club was formed in 1931 to take advantage of the opening of the newly reconstructed Hoylake Outdoor Baths. The magnificent pool cost just £25,000 and was considered one of the best in the country. Pre and post war the Club has presented many superb galas, with star professionals. At the clubs very first gala in 1931 the attendance was quoted by the press at 4,500. Just after the war many championship honours came to the club via Bryan Norman, Keith Ashton and Ken Murdock. The Club also won the Wirral open-air water polo league several times. An open air pool had its limitations for competitive swimming. The season was short, and although club members did not lack enthusiasm or shrink from the cold water, participation with indoor clubs was limited, this occasionally worked to our advantage when the opposition could not stand the cold. The membership became progressively younger and the club officials qualified in coaching and teaching.

The Hoylake Indoor Pool Organisation (HIPO) was formed in 1967 and they raised £25,000 towards the cost of the Concourse Pool which opened in 1976. The outdoor pool had deteriorated and was under threat of closure, when the Hoylake Outdoor Pool Organisation was formed under the leadership of HASC member Peter Cottriall. They did a magnificent job in keeping the pool open for a further six years, until in 1981 the pool closed its doors for good after 50 glorious years.

From the 80 ' s onwards the club has concentrated on competitive swimming and had begun to make their mark as one of the top North West Clubs. We won the Peninsular League in 1985 and have retained this title for the last seventeen years. We were , promoted to division one in th :J League in 1989, and to division one in the Deva league in 1990. With extra training time, and a band of dedicated teachers, coaches and committee members, the team made further progress, until in 1995 we were promoted to the Speedo Premier Division. The Club now has over 300 members and swims A, B, and C teams in competition. In 2001 we have swum in over 60 different galas. Ex Hoylake swimmer, Jason Hender swam in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, our masters swimmer, Neil Kemp continues to enjoy success in European and World Masters Championship, in 2001 and at 14 years old Kim Jervis was ranked number One in the country for 200m backstroke. Although these are our some of our stars nearly every gala our swimmers are breaking their own personnel best times. throughout the 70 years of the Club is the team spirit. Today we have 7 swimmers qualified for the English National Age Group and Youth Championships.  HASC continues to be a happy sociable club and we will aim to to bring the best out of all our swimmers to help them achieve their full potential.
